Traditional Weapons of Papua

Papua is the second largest island in the world after Greenland. There are various tribes that are widespread in coastal and mountainous areas of Papua. Each tribe has its own way of surviving, inherited from generations before. Generally, they survive by hunting or fighting.

For this reason, they equip themselves with various traditional weapons, including:

a. Bow and arrow

Bow and arrow are the most popular main weapons used for fighting and hunting. The bow is made of wood or bamboo, while the bowstring is made of rattan. The arrows themselves are made of bamboo, wood and sharpened animal bones. To add to the effect of the wound, these arrowheads are usually spiked with poisonous liquid from the sap of forest plants.

b. Spear

Spear is one of the weapons commonly used for hunting. Spears are made from natural ingredients such as: Spear handle made of wood, spear eyes of stone or animal bones. Spears usually have 1 eye or 2 eyes. In the modern era, people have made metal spears. Spears are usually used for hunting because they don’t sound like firearms. This will make it easier for people to catch

c. Dagger

Besides bow, arrow and spear, Papua also has a dagger which is a complementary tool of arrows and bows which are the main weapons. This knife is used for hunting, fighting and taking forest products. This knife is unique because it is made from the bones of a cassowary foot. The cassowary foot bones are chosen because they are easily shaped and sharpened but still have a strong structure. While the handle is decorated with cassowary feathers or natural fibers.

d. Stone ax

The ax is also one of the traditional weapons used to farm and clear land. The ax’s eye is made of sharp mashed stone. Meanwhile, the handle is made of wood and tied with rattan. How to use it is very easy, just by tapping on the part of the rock that points to the object to be cut for example wood, meat or something else. Today, you will find it hard to find this stone ax because it is only used by a small group of people in the interior of Papua.
