The Asmat are an ethnic group of New Guinea, residing in the Papua province of Indonesia. The Asmat inhabit a region on the island’s southwestern coast bordering the Arafura Sea, with lands totaling approximately 18,000 km² (7,336 mi²) and consisting of mangrove, tidal swamp, freshwater swamp, and lowland rainforest.

The land of Asmat is located both within and adjacent to Lorentz National Park and World Heritage Site, the largest protected area in the Asia-Pacific region. The total Asmat population is estimated to be around 70,000 as of 2004.[1] The term “Asmat” is used to refer both to the people and the region they inhabit.

The Asmat have one of the most well-known woodcarving traditions in the Pacific, and their art is sought by collectors worldwide.

Itinerary

Day 1JAYAPURA ARRIVAL - DEKAI (L,D)

Upon arrival at Sentani airport of Jayapura, fly with Trigana air about 55 minutes. Flying past vertical mountain cliffs and mist clad valleys; you will understand why the place remained isolated for so many centuries! After passing local customs – there are alcohol restrictions in Dekai. Dekai is a newly developed village to a small size town, after recent self-autonomy policy in Papua couple year ago. Road, airport, and government office, etc are started to build. Arrival in Dekai then checks in to the small hotel in Dekai. This town lies on the lower altitude than Wamena. Dekai is the home of the Manimo’s tribe, which quite civilized now. Lunch and dinner will serve in the simple hotel, your guide will arrange to motorize for next day tour. You may walk around in Dekai to see the activities of native people.

Day 2DEKAI - LOPON - BRAZA RIVER - MUARA SIRETZ (B,L,D)

After breakfast at hotel, transfer by motorcycle to the small traditional harbor on Lopon village about 1 hour of rough ride along the unpaved road. From Lopon we will sail down to the south of Braza River one of the largest river flowing to the south joining other rivers to Asmat region. All the way you will see the dense forest, peaceful surrounding, sometimes encounter the other passing by boats. On the way, we may stop at the small villages that belong to Citak Mitak tribe. This tribe built their houses on the riverside make of wood shape, with a grass roof. In the past 1980s the tribe still naked, however, the opening of the access to their village has changed their way of clothing. Now they wear short pants but most of them goes with no shirt. There are 2 or 3 small villages, most of them still work as food gather such as fishing and hunting animals. We will arrive at Muara Siretz in about 7 hours sail downriver. Dinner and overnight at village we will set up a tent to avoid the insect and mosquito.

Day 3MUARA-BASMAN – SENGGO - JINAK (B,L,D)

With motorized canoe after breakfast downstream of Dairam River all the way to Jinak via Senggo the sub District of Citak Mitak tribe region. Along the river sides, you could see local people paddling on their canoes, bird, or even flying foxes scared by the engine of the boat, beautiful trees, and the boat ride itself is fun.
Lunch serve on the boat while Dinner and overnight at local house at village of Jinak. (Boat ride approx. 7 – 8 hours. B,L,D)

Day 4 JINAK- ATSY – ASMAT TRIBE VILLAGE (B, L, D)

Early breakfast, you are proceeding to get on the boat again for another long ride to Asmat village via Atsy. Atsy is the second largest sub District in the Asmat Tribe region. Passing the big rivers of Wildemann and Sirets, the most well-known river to the Asmat people, enjoying the view of the busy villages on both sides until you arrive at village in the afternoon. Meals served by the cook. Overnight at Men house or school (Boat ride approx. 8 hours. B,L,D)

Day 5 ASMAT TRIBE CEREMONIES (B,L,D)

To finish off your adventure to Asmat, the Ceremony demonstration will be held at the village to make a more enjoyable trip, such as ritual songs with drumming also canoe racing and Mbist pole.

Day 6 ASMAT VILLAGE – AGATS (B, L, D)

Before living in the village there are several art collections for your home souvenir. Walk to motorized canoe sail to Agats. Lunch served en route. In the afternoon you may walk around of Agats, the sub-District of the Asmat Tribe region & also visit the museum in Agats, which is so worth it to do. Stay and dinner at Asmat Inn of Agats.

Day 7 AGATS / EWER – TIMIKA

Fly from Ewer to Timika and end of service.
